Monks of the Basilian monastery in Shcheploty (1747): biographical information

Abstract

The general overview of the achievements of modern Ukrainian and Polish historiographies
in the areas of study of the history of the Basilian monasteries and biographies of Basilian
monks is given. The main body of sources for studying biographical information about the
monks is defined.
The historical information about Shcheploty Basilian monastery is presented: the time and
place of the two foundations, rights and privileges, ktitors, the sources of financial profits,
the development of household yard, the functioning of the school novitiate. The common
ascetic way of life of monks and dynamics of changes are defined. Causes of liquidation of
the monastery and the fate of its property are identified. The prosopography characteristics
of monks – the territorial and social origin, the age limits of admission to the monkhood, the
time of residence in the order and monastery, the total duration of life, the educational level
and monastic duties – are analyzed on the basis of the reconstructed biographies.
