Abstract

The educational activities of Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra during the second half of
the 19 th and the beginning of the 20 th century – under jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church
of the Moscow Patriarchate – are investigated. The changes in the status of the educational
institution and its reprofiling are traced through archival documents: college, menʼs training
and vocational college for the children of the adjacent villages with four year course (from
1859); two-class parochial school (from 1886); high primary school of Pochayiv, where
teachers for parochial schools of Volyn graduated (from 1918). The attention is paid to the
fact that after affiliation of Volyn to the Polish state by The Treaty of Riga on March 18,
1921, Holy Dormition Monastery began to cooperate with Ukrainian patriotic organizations,
including the field of national education. Entrenchment of the Ukrainian idea, supported by
the progress of the National Revolution of 1917-1921, pushed the Pochayiv Lavra closer to
the local Ukrainian community, which tried to influence the monastery through joint cultural
and educational events and giving proposals concerning democratic educational process and
national education.
