TEXTUAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE KIEVO-PECHERSKY PATERIK AND THE PATERIKON (1635) BY
Abstract
This paper examines doctrinal differences between the medieval and early-
modern versions of the Kyiv Orthodox Church thought. The core source of my
research is the Paterikon (1635) by Sylvestr Kosov. It is the so-called translation
of “Ukrainian” medieval Lives of the Holy Fathers into Polish. The author of
Paterikon tried to find a third way between the Catholic and Protestant dogmatic
traditions; however, he took Catholic sources as the model and provided in the
text of Paterikon hidden oppositions to the Protestant teaching.
Key words: “good deeds”, Calvinist idea of predestination, severe trials of
the soul, ascetic practices (fasting, prayers, and vespers), vows (poverty, chastity, and obedience).
